Undergraduate and Postgraduate Academic Research Projects
At the UG and PG levels, students undertake academic research projects as part of their curriculum requirements. These projects are designed to develop critical thinking, research methodology skills, and subject-specific expertise. They provide students with hands-on experience in experimental design, data collection, and scientific analysis, thereby fulfilling essential academic credits while nurturing a spirit of inquiry.
Doctoral Research Projects
Ph.D. scholars in the department pursue advanced research projects that contribute to the award of the doctoral degree. These projects focus on cutting-edge areas of zoological science, ranging from biodiversity and ecology to parasitology, genetics, and conservation biology. Doctoral research is supervised by experienced faculty members and often results in publications in reputed journals, thereby strengthening the department’s academic reputation.
Externally Funded Research Projects
Beyond academic requirements, the department actively engages in research projects funded by government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and international bodies. These projects address pressing issues in zoology and allied fields, including conservation of endangered species, sustainable aquaculture practices, and ecological monitoring. Collaborations at the national and international level provide both faculty and students with opportunities to contribute to global scientific knowledge and policy frameworks.
Department of Zoology’s research current focus areas:
1. Biochemistry
2. Fish and Fisheries & Aquatic Ecology
3. Reproductive Biology
4. Molecular Biology and Enzymology
5. Bioinformatics
01
Biochemistry
Research in biochemistry focuses on the molecular basis of life processes. Studies range from enzyme activity and metabolic pathways in regional species to broader applications in health, agriculture, and environmental science. This work connects local biodiversity with national and international advances in biochemical research
02
Fish and Fisheries & Aquatic Ecology
The department emphasizes research on fish biology, aquaculture, and aquatic ecosystem management. Projects explore the rich freshwater resources of North East India, addressing local livelihood needs while contributing to India’s fisheries development and global discussions on sustainable aquatic ecology.
03
Reproductive Biology
Investigations in reproductive biology examine mechanisms of reproduction, fertility, and species conservation. From indigenous fish breeding in Assam to reproductive health studies in animal husbandry and mammalian physiology with wider implications, the department’s research contributes to biodiversity preservation and informs global scientific understanding.
04
Molecular Biology and Enzymology
Research in molecular biology and enzymology focuses on genetic regulation, enzyme activity, and biochemical processes in different species e.g., fish. These studies enhance understanding of growth, reproduction, and disease resistance in aquaculture and other similar perspectives at local and international levels
05
Bioinformatics
The department integrates computational tools with biological data to decode genetic and ecological patterns. Bioinformatics projects highlight the unique biodiversity of North East India while linking to India’s growing bioinformatics initiatives and global genomic databases. This research strengthens the bridge between local species knowledge and international scientific collaboration.
Note:
Through this multi-tiered approach to research, the Department of Zoology at Madhabdev University ensures that students and scholars are not only fulfilling academic requirements but also contributing to the advancement of science and society.
